Roger Federer completes the career Grand Slam, beating Robin Soderling in straight sets 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 at the 2009 French Open. Robin Soderling took down the "King of Clay" Rafael Nadal who was the four-time defending champion at the event. Soderling's win opened up the door for Federer to grab his first career title. Federer told the crowd after his finals win, "It's nice to be here on the podium as the winner, for a change. It's amazing," Federer's title at Roland Garros marked his fourteenth major trophy, which tied that of Pete Sampras. Federer went on to break the all-time singles Grand Slam record at Wimbledon in July.
